We consider the environment in all Upofloor facilities, raw material purchases, manufacturing, shipment, installation, maintenance and recycling. Find out more about our environmental standards and the various certifications that we have achieved.
Upofloor Oy has been granted quality certification in accordance with the SFS-EN ISO 9001 standard and environmental certification in accordance with the SFS-EN ISO 14001 standard.. The systems are certified by Det Norske Veritas Certification Oy/Ab.
These certificates are valid for the following scope: Floor coverings products, development and technologies process, manufacturing process, support activities/processes to former processes.
Upofloor products are ecologically sustainable and friendly for both humans and the environment over their entire lifespan. Our floor coverings are classified as M1, the best class of construction materials in terms of emissions.
The Finnish emissions classification of construction materials promotes the development and use of low-emissions construction materials. To guarantee the quality of indoor air, emissions must be considered in all phases of design, manufacturing and usage. The construction material classification is granted by the Building Information Foundation RTS (Finland).
The LEED certification of premises is based on an evaluation model defined by the non-profit-organization Green Building Council, which also grants the certification. Premises are evaluated according to the environmental loads of its location, water usage, energy efficiency, use of materials and indoor conditions.
LEED certification is granted by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), an independent industry organization.
FloorScore® is a comprehensive U.S. certification system for floor coverings that is based on the LEED point system. Zero, Xpression, LifeLine products and Quartz tiles have passed the FloorScore® test for environmental approval. To be granted FloorScore® certification a product must pass demanding emissions tests to ensure that the product does not release any compounds that are detrimental to the quality of indoor air. Regular factory audits are also required.
FloorScore® certification is based on the LEED point system and is granted by the US Resilient Floor Covering Institute (RFCI).
Established in 1978, Der Blaue Engel is the oldest voluntary environmental approval for materials and services. To be granted the right to use this label a product must pass demanding emissions tests to ensure that the product does not release any compounds that are detrimental to the quality of indoor air.
Upofloor's Zero and Xpression product family has been granted the Der Blaue Engel label by the following German agencies: The Environmental Label Jury, the Federal Ministry for the Environment Nature Conservation Building and Nuclear Safety, the German Environment Agency and RAL gGmbH.

Floor coverings are selected on the basis of many criteria, among which environmental friendliness plays a major role these days. European resilient flooring manufacturers have developed together an EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) Calculator for determining the environmental impacts of different floor coverings. The calculator can be downloaded freely from the internet and provides information about environmental impacts by product group.
It is thus possible to assess the environmental impacts of linoleum, rubber, PVC coverings and LifeLine-type thermoplastic coverings, for example.
The calculator provides information about the environmental impacts of each product group over its entire lifespan. The calculations take into consideration the impacts of the raw material, manufacturing process, installation, transportation, actual usage and maintenance, and disposal. The Environmental Product Declarations provide detailed information about carbon-dioxide emissions, the share of renewable and non-renewable energy in the manufacturing process, and the hazardous waste created over the entire lifespan.
